2016 Winner

Sunbeam

sunbeam

shining on your face

heavenly spotlight on your book

which is old and smells like a library closet

but you wanted it anyway

and now you read it

in the shade

of that tree in the backyard

they say they didn’t plant

but it’s here now

so you sit

with the cookies

your mother made not an hour ago

and filled the tiny tiled kitchen

with desert heat

which made you thirsty

and you got a glass

of lemonade

your father made

lemon candy sweet for ten seconds

then

sour hits your mouth like a golden gloves boxer

and mama can’t stand that

but dad likes it

and so do you

so you drink the golden gloves lemonade

and eat those cookies your mother made

under the mysterious tree

with the book

which smells old

like the library

and it’s all so much

that

you fall asleep
